Gems of La Cosecha

I met a friend a few weeks back at La Cosecha, which is a beautiful market with Latin American restaurants and shops.

It is close to the Union Market and other shops including Politics and Prose and a records store.

My first impression of La Cosecha was excitement. This place has quite a fancy, yet contemporary style. There are many vendors and restaurants to explore within La Cosecha with unique offerings including chocolate, coffee, and clothing. In fact, we saw people on the second floor taking a dance class while having drinks.

I came back with my family as I was thrilled to show them this wonderful market.

We decided to eat at Mita. I had my eye on this restaurant when I had gone there in person the first time. But there was a sign in front of the restaurant that stated making reservations online.

I’m glad when we went to Mita this time, the restaurant was open. You don’t actually need reservations to get in.

You can choose to eat a 5-course meal for $55 per person or via the a la carte option.

I recommend the latter, as the food is quite filling even though it is tapas style.

We ordered a number of items on the menu, excited that they were plant-based. As vegetarians, we were able to enjoy the unique flavors of this restaurant.

Here is what we ordered:

Casabe, which has avocado, yuca, and cilantro. It tasted like an Indian snack, and I throughly enjoyed the thin and crunchy yuca with the sauce.

Venezuelan YOYO, which has radish, tartara sauce, and tempura sweet plantain. I usually eat sweet plaintain curry at home, so it was refreshing to see the same vegetable composed in a different way.

Vegetable fries, which has purple asparagus, truffle sabayon, enoki mushrooms, and heart of palm. This was a special preparation of fries that I’ve never tasted before. This is also definitely worth ordering if you love fries and want to taste them in a different way.

MITA burger, which is the best thing on the menu hands down. I don’t usually eat burgers, but this one really hit the ball out of the park in terms of taste. The burger contains aioli, lettuce, root vegetables, brioche, and heirloom tomato; the cheese is divine with the combination of these ingredients.

Even the cutlery was unique and styled with precision of a luxurious restaurant.

Using the QR code, we got drinks from Las Gemelas, which is another terrific restaurant nearby. Las Gemelas means “the twin girls” and is by a DC company called Destination Unknown Restaurants (according to its website). There are two restaurants within Las Gemelas: Cocina Mexicana and Taqueria. I haven’t gotten a chance to eat here, but the drinks are pretty good. If you want something to drink to cool down on a hot Sunday, this is the place to be. Even the non-alcoholic drinks (especially the “Jugo Verde,” which is a cucumber heaven) are phenomenal.

We ordered the following:

“Mayahuel” – a smoky Mezcal drink.

“Pitaya Mojito” – a fun dragonfruit drink.

“Jugo Verde” – a refreshing, non-alcoholic cucumber drink.

I thoroughly enjoyed both Mita and Las Gemelas and would recommend you visit these places when you visit La Cosecha.
